What is an RN in the Fashion Industry?

By Saper Law | June 21, 2007

A Registered Identification Number, or RN, is a number issued by the Federal Trade Commission to businesses involved in the “manufacture, importing, distribution, or sale of textile, wool, or fur products” and residing within the United States. Once granted, a RN may not be transferred or assigned and can only be used by the person or firm to whom they were issued. The RN is an all-inclusive substitute to the deprecated wool products label or WPL. WPLs serve the same purpose as the RN and are still in use, but are no longer granted by the FTC.

Several acts govern the labeling of textile products and require that labels be affixed to the clothing identifying, among other things, the business name of the company involved in manufacturing or marketing of the product. These acts’ corresponding rules and regulations allow for an RN to be used in lieu of the company’s business name. The use of the RN is as “identifying and binding” on the labeler as the use of a business name.

Companies located outside of the United States may use their own business name, or, if importing into the United States, may use the name or RN of the domestic importer, wholesaler, or ultimate retailer. The RN is not required, however, for doing business within the United States and only acts as a substitute for the business name on a label.

The FTC recommends the use of RNs for the following reasons: “it lets buyers easily identify and find you by using an RN directory or the RN look-up service on the Internet; it usually takes up less space on the label than the company name; and it facilitates record-keeping and helps you keep track of who’s who in the textile trade.”

Applications for RNs may be submitted online and the process is free of charge. Online applications take within three days to process and a letter is mailed to the applicant shortly thereafter.
