Meet Patel Brothers

In the diverse landscape of international grocery stores, one name stands out as a beacon of cultural richness and culinary diversity – Patel Brothers. Founded by Mafat and Tulsi Patel in 1974, Patel Brothers has grown from a small, family-run store to one of the largest Indian and South Asian grocery store chains in the United States.

The Patel Brothers story began in Chicago, Illinois, where Mafat and Tulsi Patel, recent immigrants from India, recognized the need for a store catering to the growing South Asian community. In 1974, they opened their first grocery store, named Patel Brothers, in the Devon Avenue neighborhood – an area that would soon become synonymous with the vibrant cultural enclave of Little India.

A Pillar of the Community

The store started small, offering essential Indian and South Asian ingredients and spices to the local community. What set Patel Brothers apart was their commitment to authenticity and quality, sourcing products directly from the source to ensure customers had access to the same flavors they knew and loved from home.

As the South Asian community in the United States grew, so did the demand for authentic ingredients and products. Recognizing this trend, Patel Brothers began expanding its product range, offering a wide array of spices, lentils, grains, frozen goods, and more. The store became a one-stop-shop for anyone looking to recreate the tastes of home in their own kitchen.

Patel Brothers Today

The first store’s success paved the way for the expansion of the Patel Brothers chain. Over the years, the family opened new locations in cities with large South Asian populations. Today, Patel Brothers has 51 locations throughout the country, including Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and Florida. Each store retained the commitment to quality and authenticity that had been the hallmark of the original Patel Brothers.

Patel Brothers extends beyond its role as a grocery store. It is a cultural hub for the South Asian community and offers an immersive shopping experience that goes beyond the transactional nature of grocery shopping. It is a symbol of the cultural mosaic that makes up America, showcasing the richness of South Asian heritage.

Patel Brothers stands as a testament to the American Dream and the entrepreneurial spirit of immigrants. From its humble beginnings on Devon Avenue to a nationwide chain, the grocery chain has become a household name known for its commitment to authenticity, quality, and community. As the grocery chain continues to evolve and adapt to changing tastes, its story remains an inspiring example of how a family’s passion for food can shape the culinary landscape of a nation.
