This June, and in the spirit of celebrating Father’s Day, we are highlighting our Intellectual Property and Business practice areas by shining a spotlight on Saper Law client, The Dovetail Project. The Dovetail Project is a non-profit organization whose mission is to give young fathers ages 17-24 the skills and support they need to be better fathers for their children and better men in their communities.
Meet The Dovetail Project
The Dovetail Project, founded in 2009 by Sheldon Smith, is transforming lives for fathers and families in Chicago. For over 15 years, The Dovetail Project has offered a powerful 12-week fatherhood program that equips participants with essential parenting and life skills. This impactful curriculum has empowered hundreds of fathers to pursue meaningful employment, further education, and to form significantly stronger relationships with their children.
How It Began
When Sheldon Smith became a father at 21, he quickly recognized the lack of support available for young fathers. Motivated by his own experience, he founded The Dovetail Project. Sheldon has been repeatedly recognized for his leadearship and advocacy. He was named a Top Ten Hero in 2016 by CNN and a Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur in 2018. He has also received the American Red Cross Community Impact Hero Award and the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Award.
The Fatherhood Relief Fund
In addition to Dovetail’s 12-week program, in 2020, the organization launched the Fatherhood Relief Fund as a response to the initial challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This Fatherhood Relief Fund plays a crucial role in providing essential resources to families ensuring that parents have the support and supplies necessary to create a safe and healthy home. It has now expanded its reach by benefiting over 13,000 families and counting. The Dovetail Project is dedicated to fostering stronger families and more resilient communities.
