Daliah Speaker to Speak at the North American Entertainment, Media, and IP Law Summit in Grand Cayman

The North American Entertainment Law Summit delivers a four day continuing legal education conference, focused on constantly evolving topics within the entertainment, sports, media, and intellectual property law fields. Court Room Sketch Artist and Saper Law Client, Margaret Small, Grants a License to Warner Bros. to Use Her Sketches in Connection with Black Mass, starring Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch

Saper Law recently assisted Margaret Small, a courtroom sketch artist, negotiate a copyright licensing agreement with Warner Brothers. For the last 40 years, Margaret has served as a sketch artist for numerous high profile trials, included the recent Michael Jordan v. Dominick’s right of publicity trial.  However, it was her work in the trial of notorious Boston mobster James “Whitey” Bulger that caught the attention of Warner Bros. Studios.  Warner Bros. approached Margaret for licensing some of her unique sketches of the Bulger trial for inclusion in a feature-length documentary centered around the capture and trial of the infamous mobster.  Continue Reading

Recap of Saper Law and BMI presentation on Music Licensing

BMI, in partnership with Saper Law and the Illinois Restaurant Association, sponsored a session recently (8/26) in Chicago on music licensing aimed at educating restaurant and bar owners in the Chicago area on how to legally play music in their establishments.  BMI's Dan Spears discussed when a restaurant or venue needs a public performance license, how licensing fees are calculated and where the money goes.  In addition, award-winning BMI songwriter Dylan Altman was on hand to talk about the role that a performing rights organization plays in a songwriter's career and how much he appreciates the restaurant industry for supporting Continue Reading

What ITune’s “Beats” Acquisition Means for Musicians

On May 28, 2014, Apple announced it would be buying Beats Electronics for $3 billion - $2.6 billion in cash plus another $400 million in equity.  Apple plans to leverage and exploit Beat's streaming music service alongside Apple's venerable but slowing pay-per-download Itunes service.  The founders of Beats, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, will stay on at the firm and work with Apple.
