Fox32 ChicagoNOW Interviews Daliah Saper on How Amazon Prime Members Can Claim Refunds From $2.5B Settlement
Fox 32 ChicagoNOW recently interviewed Daliah Saper to discuss the massive $2.5 billion settlement Amazon paid to resolve the Federal Trade Commission’s deceptive trade practices lawsuit brought against it, and what this actually means for consumers.
During the interview, Daliah explained that while the headline number is eye-catching, individual consumers can generally expect refunds of around $50, reflecting the scale of Amazon’s Prime user base rather than large per-person payouts. The settlement resolves allegations that Amazon made it difficult for consumers to cancel Prime subscriptions, in violation of consumer protection laws governing subscription-based services. Amazon did not admit wrongdoing but agreed to settle and implement changes.
Daliah noted that consumers who have not yet received refunds can still submit claims, with payments expected to continue rolling out through the summer. She also emphasized that private lawsuits may be limited depending on state law, making regulatory enforcement by the FTC especially significant.
The interview placed the Amazon settlement in broader context, highlighting other FTC actions against companies like ABCmouse for similar subscription practices. Daliah explained that regulators are increasingly requiring that canceling a subscription be just as easy and clear as signing up, with no confusing language or hidden steps.
Finally, Daliah offered practical consumer advice: keep track of active subscriptions, watch for recurring charges—especially in family and in-app purchases—and take advantage of tools that help identify and cancel unwanted subscriptions. While the responsibility still falls on consumers to cancel, the law is increasingly pushing companies to make that process transparent and straightforward.
